07/23/08: A note regarding our 2nd Pre-Trip July 20-23
Trip went well. (Almost) On Sunday the 20th, as we traveled, it rained all through Las Vegas and a lot through ELY up through White Horse Pass just South of Wendover. It cleared up by Wendover and had not rained at all there.
Monday we spent all day setting up and dragging. Salt was Hard, Dry and Smooth, Weather was in low 90’s and overcast.
We completely finished the Long Course (8 mi) and had both the Short Courses ready to go to begin dragging again on Tues. morning. It Thundered and Lighting most of the night (Monday night) but no rain fell in “Downtown” Wendover.
Not so on the salt flats, there was considerable water standing across most of our race course areas and we had to call off any further work for this trip.
We decided to wait until we arrive just prior (A week) to the event to do the finishing touches on the courses. With no further rain ( the storm had passed through) in sight we feel that the water should be gone in a few days and the salt will be left in at least as good condition (Great) as it was prior to the storm.
As we left Wendover the weather was Clear and Hot (Of Course) We’ll keep you up dated from now until the event with reports as we get them. Be sure to check the SCTA / BNI web site for ACCURATE Up Dates.
A special thanks to the other members of our Advance Crew. Russ Eyres, Fred Dannenfelzer, Jim Jensen, Jim Dunn and Larry Volk.

07/22/08: Our on site course prep. team reports that last night a typical summer thunderstorm came through Bonneville and dumped a lot of water on the courses. While it will delay some of our course preparation work, we expect the water to be gone in a couple of days. The salt was quite dry and barring more rain, things should be back to normal soon.07/19/08: Check out the El Mirage wet lake photos - click here
07/18/08 8am: Due to the mud and standing water on the lakebed from recent thunderstorms, the July 2008 SCTA El Mirage Time Trials have been cancelled. There will be no Racing News published for July.
07/17/08: Still some water on the lakebed. We will make a final decision tomorrow (Friday) morning.07/16/08: El Mirage lake received some rain during a recent thunderstorm. It seems to be drying nicely. Weather is predicted to be sunny and clear, in the 100's and 10-15 MPH winds thru Monday. As always, the event is on until cancelled. We are checking the surface daily.

06/30/08: Our advance team have returned from their first trip to the salt to begin lying out our courses for SpeedWeek 08. As of this date we have three courses set up. 1 long (5 mile) and 2 short (3 mile). Salt was dry and hard. More to follow in the weeks to come.

04/26/08:
CAMPING AT SPEEDWEEKWe have received many inquiries about camping on the salt. The terms of our permit from the Bureau Of Land Management (BLM) to conduct Speedweek expressly prohibits camping on the salt. However, there is a large flat area
adjacent to the "bend" of the access road and more flat area off the "Pilot Peak Road" road that will accommodate camping, trailers and motor homes and free camping is allowed on BLM land in those areas. To help accommodate folks that are planning on using these areas the SCTA/BNI has decided, with the BLM's permission, to place additional facilities (Outhouses/Trash Bin) for campers convenience. We plan to provide a total of 6 outhouses and a 30 yd. dumpster. We hope that this will be well received and the facilities will not be abused

I am writing on behalf of the Gold Coast Roadster & Racing Club regarding the 16th Annual Dry Lakes Racers
Hall of Fame 'Gas-Up'. This year we are hoping to get the word out about the event a little earlier than in the
past years, especially letting everyone know the date to be sure it is on everyone's calendar.
Generally the pre-registration packets are mailed out in late May/early June so it helps if new attendees have
their names into the club before then, to get their names and addresses on the mailing list.

03/15/08: For those of you that don't know, Jon is our SpeedWeek Potentate Of Porta Potties AKA POPP. He says that the
white stuff in the picture is actually not salt but rather some of the 138" of snow that has fallen around his neck of the woods
this winter. He's just taking the opportunity to practice his SpeedWeek servicing chores during a lull in the storms. Hard to
believe SpeedWeek is almost here and the 100 deg. weather that goes with it.

02/12/08: Landspeed Racing fans: The meeting scheduled for March 2008 at Lake Gairdner, South Australia has had to be cancelled and no further date has been scheduled at this stage, owing to the unusually wet conditions of the lake. This is the second year in a row the meeting has had to be cancelled. While much of Australia is in severe drought the lake has received summer rains thus we may have to look at running the event earlier however I will keep you informed. Regards, Rod Hadfield, Secretary, Dry Lakes Racers Australia

01/13/08: Speedweek continues to gain popularity as a "Happening". Regarding lodging: It is not too complicated. There ARE only so many rooms in Wendover; and there are more folks needing rooms than the amount of rooms that are available. It has been that way for the past several years. Weekdays and Sundays have always had more rooms available than Fri. and Sat. By changing the start day, more folks will be there on the days that more rooms are available. The 600 rooms the Peppermill properties made available would never satisfy 3000 people (who all called at once) but you can bet less than 1/2 of those rooms would have been available for Friday and Saturday under the previous inspect Friday/start Saturday schedule.
